Respiratory failure is defined as respiratory dysfunction results in the abnormalities of oxygenation or ventilation (CO2 elimination) which are severe enough to threaten the function of vital organs. Arterial blood gas criteria for respiratory failure may be arbitrarily established as a Po2 under 60 mm Hg (7.8 kPa) or a Pco2 over 50 mm Hg (6.5 kPa). Acute respiratory failure may occur in diverse pulmonary and non-pulmonary disorders. read more »»

Symptoms and signs for acute respiratory failure are of the underlying disease combined with those of hypercapnia or hypoxemia. The main symptom of hypoxemia is dyspnea, though profound hypoxemia may exist in the absence of complaints.
Treatment of acute respiratory failure consists of:

  • Specific therapy towards the underlying disease
  • Respiratory supportive care for adequate gas exchange maintenance
  • General supportive care

It is very important for all the physicians working in the critical care unit to understand the approach for respiratory failure, as it is one of the serious conditions and it needs to be managed as early as possible. This course on the approach to respiratory failure helps all the general physicians and also the doctors working in the emergency department and critical care department to understand the causes, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, and management of respiratory failure in a detailed manner.
