What you'll learn

Protein is essential for the growth, development, and maintenance of the body; it also provides energy. Protein yields 4 kcal of energy per gram (g). Food sources of protein include meat, fish, poultry, milk, cheese, yogurt, peanut butter, nuts, dried beans, and grain products. read more »»

As proteins in the body are continuously degraded and resynthesized, some amino acids are lost during these processes and a continuous supply of amino acids is required to replace them even after the growth is stopped. Energy intake is the primary factor that influences protein needs. Thus, all protein recommendations are based on the assumption that energy needs are adequately met and they are also based on intakes of complete protein; appropriate corrections must be made for a vegetarian to provide adequate protein. It is very important to understand the different functions and roles of protein to avoid protein-energy malnutrition (PEM).
