The care of patients receiving artificial mechanical ventilation is complex and requires skill and experience. Therefore taking a course or having an in depth knowledge on this topic is a must and worth learning. Because of the complexity of information, it should be learnt from basics and should be diversified. Mechanical ventilation is a form of life support. Mechanical ventilation is a “life-sustaining treatment”. It is a treatment that can prolong life and takes over the work of breathing when a person is not able to breathe enough on their own. It provides time for establishing therapeutic management aimed at the triggering cause of injury until the patient improves physiologic balance.

Mechanical ventilation is one of the most common interventions implemented in the intensive care unit. More than half of the patients in the ICU are ventilated the first 24 hours after ICU admission; comprised of individuals who have acute respiratory failure, compromised lung function, difficulty in breathing, or failure to protect their airway.
