What you'll learn

Cancer is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity possibly due to increased levels of stress, lifestyle habits, and congenital abnormalities. Leukaemia, lymphoma, and myeloma (and many other related blood disorders) are some of the types of cancers that can affect both children and adults and require extensive treatment procedures including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and bone marrow stem cell transplantation. The only approved treatment for these malignant blood disorders is haemopoietic stem cell transplantation. read more »»

The basis behind bone marrow stem cell transplantation is that the bone marrow contains CD34+ haemopoietic stem cells that are capable of replacing diseased bone marrow which has been removed using radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Initially, bone marrow stem cells were the only option available and they were harvested from the pelvis of a donor under general anaesthetic. More recently peripheral blood stem cells have become the gold standard. This involves mobilizing the haemopoetic stem cells in the bone marrow into the peripheral circulation and collecting them using a process called apheresis.

Bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cell transplantation can be autologous, allogeneic, or haploidentical. This presentation will give an overview of bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cell transplantation.
