What you'll learn

Bleeding disorders are characterized by defects in hemostasis, leading to increased susceptibility to bleeding or hemorrhagic diathesis. They are caused either by coagulation defects or platelet disorders, or a combination of both. Bleeding disorders may be inherited or acquired, but clinical features may overlap. For example, mucocutaneous bleeding is associated more with platelet disorders, whereas the bleeding into potential spaces is more characteristic of coagulation defects.read more »»

Assessment of these patients is a multistep evaluation process, which involves a complete detailed history, thorough physical examination, and relevant laboratory evaluation. Some patients may have hidden signs and symptoms that make diagnosis more difficult. A meticulous approach and a basic understanding of these disorders are necessary for interpreting laboratory studies to diagnose the disorder and ensure appropriate treatment accurately.

The purpose of this session is to differentiate signs and symptoms of primary hemostasis defects and plasma coagulation defects, explain the marked deficiency of von Willebrand factor leads to excessive bleeding, different screening tests of hemostasis, and list several causes of an abnormal result in each case. The expert will also discuss how to predict the results of hemostatic screening tests such as PT/INR, PTT, platelet count, and bleeding time.
