Diagnosis plays an important role in early and prompt treatment. Until the 20th century, cancer was diagnosed only when signs and symptoms of tumor growth were manifest. In many cases, surgical and radiological treatment gets limited due to metastasis of Symptomatic presentation is still the predominant route to diagnosis in all cancers, but for some cancer sites, tests have been developed to identify tissue changes that indicate either cancer precursors or early-stage tumors.
