“Among all the endocrine diseases, thyroid disorders are the most common worldwide. The situation is similar in India because it has been estimated that about 42 million people suffer from thyroid disorders. Thyroid disorders include hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, thyroiditis, thyroid enlargement or goiter, thyroid nodules, and thyroid cancer. The data available from cancer registries reveals that the prevalence of thyroid cancer was found to be 0.1%–0.2%. read more »»

In India, hypothyroidism is a common disorder and has been rising over the years. Recently, a multi-center study conducted in eight major cities of India reported that the prevalence of hypothyroidism in the adult population was 10.95%, which is five times more common in females than in males. Similarly, a recent study conducted in eleven cities of India reported a high (13.13%) prevalence of hypothyroidism in pregnancy. In India, the congenital cause is a critical variant of hypothyroidism because the disease has been reported to occur at a higher rate of 1 in every 2,640 newborns.

Even though hyperthyroidism is not as common as hypothyroidism, but it is quite prevalent. The above-mentioned multi-center study reported that the prevalence of thyrotoxicosis and subclinical hyperthyroidism in the adult population was found to be 0.72% and 1.27%.

All these reports across India prove that disease is growing apparently. Hence, it is mandatory by the physicians and medical students to enhance knowledge and skills and address case management, counseling, and prevention of thyroid disorders in patients. This course essentially provides an introduction to thyroid disorders, diagnosis, and disease management in different conditions.”
