A mutated variant of SARS-CoV-2 known as the D614G was first identified in late January or early February 2020 in Wuhan, China. The D614G then replaced the initial SARS-CoV-2 strain in few months to eventually become the dominant form of the virus circulating globally, causing the COVID-19 pandemic.
