What you'll learn

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways which contracts too much and too easily spontaneously and in response to a wide range of exogenous and endogenous stimuli. read more »»

It typically manifests itself as chest tightness, wheezing, cough, and dyspnea, all symptoms that are associated with airway obstruction Thus, Inflammation has a central role in the pathophysiology of asthma. Improvement in airflow limitation often parallels the resolution of asthma symptoms. Although asthma has been historically viewed as a reversible disease, more recent evidence indicates that permanent structural changes in the airway are typically seen in asthma and include subbasement membrane fibrosis, smooth muscle hyperplasia, new vessel formation, and glandular hyperplasia. Once considered purely an allergic disorder dominated by Th2‐type lymphocytes, IgE, mast cells, eosinophils, macrophages, and cytokines, the disease also involves local epithelial, mesenchymal, vascular, and neurologic events that are involved in directing the Th2 phenotype to the lung and through aberrant injury‐repair mechanisms to remodeling of the airway wall.
