Dr. Venkat S. Ram has been awarded Padmashri recently. He is the President and CEO of MediCiti Hospitals and MediCiti Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad. He is also Chairman, Board of Governors, American Society of Hypertension and Vice-President of American Society of Hypertension specialists.

He is a graduate of Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad. Subsequently, he completed his residency in medicine at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island and a fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Ram’s professional career has centred on the management of hypertension and he is one of the very few individuals who have combined clinical practice with an academic career.

Dr. Ram served on the Faculty of the University of Texas for many years and was the head of the hypertension clinical services. He is a prolific writer. He authored more than 310 articles and a book on the treatment of hypertension. He is also a renowned speaker in the field. Dr. Ram has made numerous contributions to our understanding of both the physiology and the management of hypertension. For more than three decades, Dr. Ram’s work has explored the mechanisms of action of various antihypertensive drugs. In addition to expertise in clinical research and medical practice, Dr. Ram is considered a uniquely skilled communicator of scientific advances. Dr. Ram was the youngest person ever to become the Master of American College of Physicians. Dr. Ram is on the editorial boards of numerous national and international medical journals. Dr. Ram is now completing a handbook of hypertension for European use and another book on hypertension in special populations for Jaypee Brothers publishers.

Dr. Ram served as the president of the American Association of Physicians from India and also as the president of medical staff, University Hospital, Dallas, USA. Dr. Ram has been repeatedly named year after year by the medical students and residents at the University of Texas Medical School as the “most skilled teacher of clinical medicine.” The Dallas County Medical Society, USA has named Dr. Ram as one of the five individuals in the history of Dallas to make the city as a centre of excellence in medicine. World Telugu Conference bestowed him the title of the “most outstanding doctor globally of Telugu origin” — an award given by the then Chief Minister, late N. T. Rama Rao.

He is a founding patron of MediCiti. He conducted several CME programs and particularly HDL – Hypertension, Diabetes and Lipids – conferences have been outstanding. Above all, he is a great humanist. Whatever he does as a doctor, specialist, executive or a friend, it is embellished by his outstanding humanistic skills. The Cardiological Society of India congratulates Dr. Venkat S.
