What you'll learn

ECG is one of the most used diagnostic tools. It is often the first diagnostic test performed for detecting heart abnormalities and considered a gold standard investigation. It mainly involves variations in various segments of a healthy heartbeat during any pathology like myocardial infarction, chest pain, heart failure, etc. Of these segments, ST-segment variation is considered as a critical tool for diagnosing myocardial infarction or ischemia. read more »»

There may be either ST elevation or depression during and between ventricular depolarization or repolarization. ST-segment variations can be complicated in a few conditions and confused with other conditions leading to the use of wrong treatment protocols. This course describes the ECG variations, the importance of ST-elevation or depression, specific rules given by Dr. Jerry Jones for easy detection and diagnosis of the ST segment.

Dr. Jones is currently the CEO of Medicus of Houston, a continuing medical education company, and its chief instructor in advanced electrocardiography. He has designed and structured some of the rules for understanding ST segments. This course will help health care professionals to better understand variations in ECG, particularly, ST elevations and depressions. Knowledge of these segment variations in ECG is essential for health care professionals for early diagnosis and prompt treatment of cardiovascular conditions.

Dr. Jones is a graduate of Tulane University and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. After a residency in internal medicine, he became one of the first full-time emergency physicians – even before emergency medicine residencies and board certification.

Dr. Jones has been on the teaching faculties of the University of Oklahoma and The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He is a published author who has also been featured in the New York Times and the Annals of Emergency Medicine for his work in the developing field of telemedicine. In addition, Dr. Jones is also a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians, a Fellow of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine and a member of the European Society of Emergency Medicine.
