A simple chest x-ray is enough to make a diagnosis of perforation detected by pneumoperitoneum. CECT scans can be done in selected patients. Timely resuscitation, operative intervention in the form of closure of perforation, and drainage of the peritoneal cavity reduce mortality rates and morbidity. When a patient presents with peritonitis features such as guarding and rigidity, they may be in shock also. Few scoring systems have been given which will detect the severity of peritonitis and can predict mortality and morbidity also. Diagnosis should be made early based on clinical symptoms and signs.
