What you'll learn

Status epilepticus (SE) is a typical medical emergency associated with significant morbidity and mortality. It is defined as a continuous seizure lasting >30 min, or two or more seizures without full recovery of consciousness between any of them. Recent guidelines suggested that any seizure that lasts >5 min probably needs to be treated as SE. Various studies reported that mortality of SE varies from 3-50%, refractory SE may lead to death in over 76% of elderly cases.read more »»

In patients with epilepsy, the prevalence of SE range from 1-16%. Moreover, accurate epidemiological data for SE are not available in India. In comparison, the incidence of SE in the US ranges from 6.2–18.3 per 100,000 population. It is necessary to recognize SE and start treatment as early as possible to avoid a refractory state. Also, it is equally essential to ensure that the patient is hemodynamically stable.

All physicians must be able to identify and treat SE promptly and efficiently. Prolonged SE can lead to other severe complications, and permanent neurologic damage can occur. So, in this session, you can get an overview of status epilepticus. This session also provides the current knowledge and update guidelines on the management of convulsive SE.
