About the Summit

Digital Pathology is rapidly gaining momentum as a proven and essential technology.

This workshop will discuss the clinical applications of digital pathology, its potential to supplement qualitative pathological findings and how it will shape the pathologists work. It will also give insights into how digital pathology solutions will help in real-time collaborations of pathologists and will provide opportunities for discussing complex and rare cases.

Session 1: Welcome address by Dr. K Hari Prasad, President, Apollo Hospitals Group.

Session 2: How Digital Pathology improves workflow and efficiency in the lab by Dr. Swarna Shivakumar, Senior consultant & HOD Pathology at Apollo Hospitals, Bangalore

Digital pathology enhances efficiency in the surgical pathology lab. Digital pathology is the use of computer technology to convert analog microscopic images into digital images. This begins right after the slide is prepared and all the way upto the final interpretation/diagnosis. Digitizing the workflow makes the process more efficient, faster , increases flexibility and efficiency of workforce. The pathologists get a better overview of their work and also helps in real time collaboration with the fellow pathologists across Apollo hospitals network for accurate diagnosis. DP also helps to reduce the low value added activities like slide retrieval and Quality assurance. Whole slide images are stored for ever and can be easily retrieved for future referral and for research.read more »»

Session 3: Clinical value proposition by Dr. Sushma Patil, Sr. Consultant and Head, Division of lab services  at Apollo Proton Cancer Center, Taramani

DIgital pathology applications provide a platform to digitize histopathology tissue section from glass slides to soft images through a process called whole slide imaging (WSI). Having digital images of a tissue sample brings with it a myriad of opportunities... Image sharing for consultation or second opinions through web portals in matter of minutes or hour reduces delays involved in instituting treatment for patients at distant locations worry free. Second opinions on difficult and challenging cases with a click of a button from subspeciality pathologist, paving the way for subspeciality pathology practice. In COVID Times digitization was a blessing in disguise. Accessibility of slides from any corner of the globe even when pathologist are located off site... work goes unhindered. Network based sharing and learning made feasible at sites where experts are lacking With web based technologies teaching and learning grows beyond borders when digitized pathology slides become available. Artificial intelligence applications improve accuracy and remove inter observe bias.... resulting in better quality care. AI algorithms can be applied to predict tumor behaviour over a period of time.... the strengths of digitization are just being realized.read more »»

Session 4: Digital Pathology in education by Dr Swarnalatha Gowrishankar, Senior Consultant and Head of the Department of Anatomic Pathology and Cytology at Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad

The power of whole slide imaging and digital pathology for teaching Pathology. This scanner is equivalent to a microscope with over a hundred heads and hence can be effectively used to teach students across the country and the world. The Apollo Hospitals is uniquely poised to deliver this as the network has a large number of senior Pathologists with super-specialty interests, there is a huge workload in the major Apollo Hospitals and the Apollo Medvarsity has an established online education portal.Students will be hand held to navigate under the microscope with modular programmes for the Pathologists in training, special modules for other medical and surgical branches and for the under graduates.read more »»
