Muscle pathology, or muscle biopsy, is an important part of diagnosis for a range of neuromuscular diseases. It is an extremely valuable tool in the investigation of inflammatory, hereditary and acquired muscle disorders. This webinar will cover the basic aspects of muscle biopsy processing and techniques along with interpretation of commonly encountered diseases.
Processing and diagnosis of muscle biopsies requires specially trained personnel. Unlike other biopsies, muscle biopsy is not rendered on formalin fixed tissue. Cryosections are used along with a battery of enzyme stains and as and when required are supplemented with electron microscopy and genetic studies.

Dr. Meenakshi Swain
Dr. Meenakshi is a senior consultant pathologist with Apollo Hospitals, a position she has held for about 20 years with a yearly turnover of 25,000 biopsies and about 12,000 cytology cases. She completed her education from SCB Medical College, Cuttack, India and completed her senior residency in NIMS, Hyderabad. She has 38 publications in national and international journals. She is a reviewer with IJPM, IJC and IJOT, and a lifetime member of NPSI, ISRTP, IAPM, IAC. Her areas of interest include neuropathology, non-neoplastic renal pathology, oncopathology and cytology.
