What you'll learn

Embroyology is a branch of biology which focusses on the study of prenatal development of gametes, fertilization, fetal, and its organ systems development. The cardiovascular system is the first main organ system to form and become functional and provides the growing embryo with oxygen and nutrients. It is therefore important to consider heart development. Congenital heart diseases are the most common abnormalities in the cardiovascular system and sometimes get unnoticed due to various reasons. read more »»

They account for about 4 to 10 in 1000 live births in the general population. They also lead to the dysfunctioning of the circulatory system and increase the risk of developing other related medical problems. Newer technologies had helped to identify these congenital heart diseases prenatally which improved the diagnosis, treatment, and early recognition helping in decreasing the burden of congenital heart diseases on health care systems.

ECG is one of the most commonly used diagnostic tools and still considered as a gold standard investigation which is often the first diagnostic test performed for detecting heart abnormalities. Knowledge of embryology, how it affects the formation and development of a foetus, the role of ECG in diagnosing birth defects, especially congenital heart defects is important for medical professionals to easily diagnose the diseases and help in prompt treatment strategies.

This course teaches you about cardiac embryology and common fetal congenital abnormalities. This course also focusses on how to better visualize and understand the anatomy and physiology of the fetal heart, with 3D model and illustrations, about cardiac embryology and the stages of heart development and how to identify on sonographic images common congenital cardiac pathologies. The text and video describe fetal heart development in detail and the echocardiographic findings of some congenital abnormalities.
