Minor surgical procedures are small procedures which are done in either emergency or outpatient department when it involves the utilization of local anesthesia. They cause minimal complications that usually do not require any inpatient admission and needs very little equipment for performing. These also need strict aseptic conditions and environment following OSHA and center for disease control guidelines. Postoperative management of patients is also important which involves wound care, suture removal, pain management, swelling, etc. These factors are also considered and important in minor surgical procedures. These are generally performed by specialists in OPD and are completed within the day of the appointment. They are also performed by interns and pursing medical graduates, technicians in cases of biopsy in medical labs. As a nurse or medical assistant in a doctor’s office, you may be asked to assist the physician with minor surgery.

This module provides a detailed overview of how to prepare for minor surgical procedures, correctly open the surgical instrument pack, and add required sterile instruments, while using a sterile technique. Including both Learn and Test modes, the online simulator offers two scenarios that test your ability to prepare for minor surgical procedures, specifically removing a mole and suturing a laceration. Practice the steps of the procedures as often as you want until you are confident. This module is based on the entry-level competencies for which the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) test the Medical Assistant.
