What you'll learn

A nebulizer is a device that changes medication from a liquid to a mist that can be inhaled through the lungs. This mist comes through a tube that is attached to a mouthpiece or facemask. Nebulizers are available for in-home purposes and also portable models available for outpatient purposes. Home nebulizers have an outlet which mainly works through electricity.

Nebulizers take at least 5 or 10 minutes to get the medicine into the lungs and sometimes even longer. The timing depends on the type of nebulizer, and medication. Peak flow is the maximum flow rate generated during forceful exhalation Nebuliser treatment was associated with a significant increase in peak flow in almost 80% of patients.

Nebulization is generally indicated in the management of acute exacerbations and long-term treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), management of cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, HIV/AIDS, and symptomatic relief in palliative care. Knowledge of how to use nebulizers, medications used in it, how long should a nebulizer used, what is peak flow test, how is it measured, etc should be known by health care professionals.

Therefore, this simulation module teaches you how to prepare for and administer nebulizer treatment, assess peak flow, and perform a spirometric test. Including both Learn and Test modes, the online simulator offers two scenarios that test your ability to either assess peak flow and perform nebulizer treatment or perform spirometry.
