What you'll learn

Intradermal injections are commonly used for antibody and allergy testing, where the substance needs to be injected between the layers of the skin. They are usually given in cases of allergy, tuberculosis testing. Medication given through dermis is absorbed slowly because of limited blood supply. It is administered just below the dermis in the epidermal layer. Intradermal injections have a longer absorption time than other parenteral routes.

The most common sites used are the inner surface of the forearm and the upper back, under the scapula. The needle length, selection of guage are also some of the important factors for correct intradermal injection. They are a less invasive and easy method for testing allergies in patients. Knowledge of what are intradermal injections, where are they given, a technique of insertion, site of injection, landmarks are very important for medical professionals and nursing staff as they encounter more patients who are to be given intradermal injections for allergy testing. Therefore, this module explains how to prepare for and administer intradermal injections into the various sites (anterior forearm, upper chest, upper back) using medication from vials and ampules. Including both Learn and Test modes, the online simulator offers three scenarios that test your ability to administer intradermal injections into different sites.
