What you'll learn

Arterial line placement is a common procedure in various critical care settings and anesthetic settings. It is a safe procedure and major complications occur only in few of the patients i.e., less than 1%. It is also a readily acceptable intervention for critically ill patients. Arterial line placement is often used in the management of critically ill patients for continuous blood pressure monitoring and to allow frequent blood gas sampling. Blood pressure monitoring is one of the essential vital signs and this method utilizes non invasive technique which is exact, specific and reliable. This is done to monitor continuous blood pressure readings which is technically called intra- arterial pressure monitoring (IAP).read more »»

Continuous IAP monitoring are more accurate and also provide more detailed information of the health status. Arterial line placement also provides a way to take frequent blood samples for lab tests. This avoids repeated needle punctures and provides comfort, time saving for both patients and clinicians. This can be performed by Critical care medicine doctors, Emergency medicine doctors, Thoracic surgeons, Registered nurses, Advanced practice nurse.

Therefore, knowledge on arterial line placement is very important for health care professionals to essentially decrease the discomfort for ICU and ICCU patients.

This module teaches you how to safely prepare for and perform the insertion of an arterial line into the three main sites. Including both Learn and Test modes, the online simulator offers eight clinical scenarios that test your ability to insert arterial lines into the radial, femoral, or dorsalis pedis artery (depending on the scenario). Practice the steps of the procedures online as often as you want, until you feel confident.
